ICYMI, a couple of weeks ago we did a little shoutout to find out some hidden gems around the greater City of Canning area.
We were looking to broaden our horizons, while in the process getting to spotlight a few small businesses around Canning’s 16 suburbs – you did not disappoint!
Below we’ve compiled your responses for the best places to eat, drink and play around the City of Canning area, and we hope you have as much fun getting amongst it as we have (so far!):
EAT & DRINK
Canning River Cafe
Kicking things off with a not-so-hidden gem, but an easy contender for most commented – Canning River Cafe. It’s location is obviously a huge help, but it’s got a rockin’ food menu that most importantly, is a big hit amongst our gluten free and dairy free fam: “I have a friend with severe gluten intolerance and this was a godsend to find”.
Kent Street & Queens Park Road, Wilson
Twig & Sparrow Cafe
Another “gem for gluten free food”, Twig & Sparrow is a brunch go-to for the people of Willeton. From epic steak sangas to a host of naughty sweet treats very hard to say no to, it’s not hard to see why.

The Tribute Cafe
Okay so The Tribute in Shelley was a pretty comfortable first place when it comes to comments, and look, their all-day brunch menu combined with the Juicy Buns burger switch up at lunch time (and dinner Thursday-Sunday) is a pretty irresistible combo. Great atmosphere, great people, cosy vibes, excellent food… What’s not to love?

Lo Quay River Cafe
We love our beachside cafes in Perth, but when you’ve got a lovely river flowing through your suburbs there’s bound to be a few gems along the journey, just like Lo Quay River Cafe. Casual riverside dining, a friendly-to-all menu and nature playground for the kids make this one an absolute charmer.

Kynd Coffee Co.
Kynd Coffee Co. is tucked away under a church, just off the hustle and bustle of Albany Highway with a daily blend courtesy of local outfit Blacklist Coffee Roasters, and matcha direct from Japan for non-coffee lovers. On the food front, enjoy a similarly pared-back selection of bagels, focaccia sandwiches and freshly-baked pain au chocolat.

More Coffee?
We had a few contenders for great coffee in the City of Canning, so we’re gonna be naughty and throw ‘em in the same paragraph. But we have it on good authority that Blacklist Coffee Roasters, BLVD Speciality Coffee and Espressoul are slingin’ some of the best.
Or Cake!
Turns out there’s not one but two stunning cake curators to be found in the City of Canning, and both look equally delectable. Hello Hello Flower Cafe (below) is a lovely spot for a slice of cake with some coffee, while Cake by Cake serve up the same, with some beautiful brunch options if you’re after something a little more substantial. Both do some insane-looking custom cakes as well!
Qoffee & Dates
Qoffee & Dates is the place to go for peace of mind, with fantastic coffee and food, along with a great selection of books if you feel like stopping in for a while. One user made a point of mentioning you have to try their chicken congee (bubur ayam) – “perfect for the cold seasons!”

Shushi Canningvale
We were hit with a bunch of great sushi places in the comments (check a couple more at the end), but Shushi in Market City definitely scored the most votes. Another family-run joint that’s “the best place for your sushi fix” with an “amazing katsu chicken sando” – which is all we need to hear to be honest.

Waverley Brewhouse
As far as great spots to sink a few cold ones with your mates, Waverley Brewhouse has been holding down things at Carousel for a while now, with an on-site nanobrewery offering plenty of options to wash down their huge menu. They’ve got plenty of TVs rocking sports as well, making for a great shop + drink afterwards combo on the weekends.

Rustico Gourmet Grocer
Another spot with plenty of votes, it’s hard to go past a high quality, family-owned and operated neighbourhood grocer. Great for stocking up the pantry, the only trouble is trying to get out of there without blowing the budget on their epic deli goods and sandwiches.

PLAY
Canning River/Kent Street Weir
The jewel in the City of Canning crown, Canning River Regional Park is the perfect spot to relax, walk through nature, go canoeing, fishing and picnicking. You can visit Woodloes Homestead, one of the few remaining 19th century houses in the area, while Kent Street Weir is a beautiful little spot for the day. And not to mention the Casteldare Mini Railway – fun for kids of all ages, and Adenia Park, which “has got this best hidden trails and river views.”
Shelley Foreshore
An equally delightful alternative is Shelley Foreshore, great for “walks, picnic and sunsets”. Enjoy city views along with a host of great community events regularly held there.
Albany Highway Op Shops
It’s no secret we love our op shopping around Perth, and the City of Canning is home to many including an epic hub on Albany Highway in Cannington that’s home to a Salvos, Vinnies, Good Sammy, Masonic Charity Outlet and Save The Children!
Canning Vale Markets
On Saturday morning from 6-10am it’s a clearance market open to the public, where you can score seafood, meat, fruit and vegetables at insane prices while still super fresh. Or head down on Sunday morning’s for the weekly Community Market and Car Boot Sale.
The Kart Centre
Chasing a bit of an adrenaline rush on your City of Canning adventures? Kart Centre in Canning Vale is the place to race. The state-of-the-art facilities offer high speed action, with French-designed go karts reaching speeds of up to 50kph! Great for birthdays or work parties, or just if you’ve got the need for speed.

The Vintage Sparrows
If you’re looking to take your vintage foraging a little deeper, The Vintage Sparrows in St James is a very cool vintage store, filled with retro scores, rustic bric-a-brac and some stunning furniture.
