Here's how the Florence County Museum is celebrating 10 years in its downtown buildingThe Florence County Museum is a key piece of downtown, and it's celebrating its 10-year anniversary at its current location. The museum at 111 W. Cheves St. has helped expand minds since 2014. It offers several art and history exhibitions throughout the year, as well as education classes for adults and children.Willow Price said she loves being a student volunteer for the museum and can't wait to see the history it will make. “I grew up in Florence, and so I remember going to the Florence museum in the old location, and I've always been into art and history,” Price said. "To see my son experience the museum is amazing to me."The Florence County Museum traces its history to Jane Beverley Evans, who established the organization in 1935. Evans is featured in a new exhibit, Recollect, that explores the history of the museum. It will be on display until Dec. 12.Evans purchased several collections of Southwestern Native pottery in 1926. The collection was held in a small room in the basem*nt of the Florence Public Library in 1930.She sponsored exhibitions there, and in 1939 formally opened the three-room basem*nt of the Florence Public Library. In 1952, the Lawton-Chase home was purchased by the Florence Museum Trustees to be a new location and opened a year later in October on Spruce Street. In 2012, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for the new Florence County Museum. It opened to the public on Oct. 12, 2014.The museum has come a long way from that small room in the Florence Public Library.Today, the two floors include exhibits on the history of the museum, well-known Florence County natives and the Pee Dee, among others. There are also rotating art exhibits.https://lnkd.in/ewfg6sYe

A sign of the times? Here's the story behind Florence County's new welcome signs.Florence County has just one shot at a first impression. Local leaders want to make sure it’s a good one.County crews were busy July 1 swapping out welcome signs across the county with a safer, more memorable design to greet visitors. The new signs are just a small part of larger efforts to improve the county’s gateways.“We want people to remember Florence County in a good way,” County Administrator Kevin Yokim said. The old signs are familiar to most Florence County residents: an outline of South Carolina in blue, with Florence County highlighted in white. Below that, the words “Welcome to Florence County.” And below that — in a small, cursive script — the words “Global Reach with a Southern Touch.”But after several years of use, the old signs have grown scarred and faded, said Gregg Robinson, CEO of the Florence County Economic Development Partnership. The new signs are much simpler and feature the county’s logo with the words “Welcome to Florence County” in a large, bold font. Robinson said the design is meant to be more memorable as drivers fly down the interstate at 70 mph.https://lnkd.in/eKQD9x5M
